Usefull tools for sysadmins and netadmins
As you will see, this page is quite a mess, I consider it like a reminder.
The classical ones
Remote control
- clusterssh: Concurrent Multi-Server Terminal Access
- dsh: Distributed Shell
- pdsh: A high-performance, parallel remote shell utility
- pssh: This package provides parallel versions of the openssh tools
- tentakel: Execute commands on many hosts in parallel
- pconsole: Tool for managing multiple xterms simultaneously
- mailmin: remote administration and access via secure email (openPGP)
Configuration
- Cfengine: An agent/software robot and a high level policy language for building expert systems to administrate and configure large computer networks
- puppet: A system automation and configuration management software
- FAI: fully automated installation
Monitoring
- mrtg: A tool to monitor the traffic load on network-links
- munin: Munin Server Monitoring Tool
- Zabbix: ZABBIX is software for monitoring of your applications, network and servers
- nagios: a scheduler used to monitor services and networks
- Cetreon: network supervision software based on nagios core with a frontend similar to Cacti (was Oreon)
- n2rrd: Nagios to RRD - generates RRD graphs form performance data
- cacti: Cacti is a complete frontend to rrdtool
- zenoss: another servers and network monitoring tool
- symon: system monitor
- ganglia: Ganglia is a scalable distributed monitoring system for high-performance computing systems such as clusters and Grids
- smartmontools: control and monitor storage systems using the Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology System (S.M.A.R.T.)
- ntop: tool that shows network usage like top
- Utilization of network links: weathermap, Weathermap 4RRD and Weathermap and Cacti
- smokeping: A powerful latency measurement tool
- htop: interactive process viewer
- mon: highly configurable service monitoring daemon
- monit: a utility for monitoring and managing daemons or similar programs running on a Unix system
- webalizer: Webserver log file analyzer
- awstats: AWStats is short for Advanced Web Statistics
- NAV: Network Administration Visualized is an advanced software suite to monitor large computer networks
Analysis
- nmap: a utility for network exploration or security auditing
- wireshark: a network protocol analyzer formerly known as ethereal
- scapy: a powerful interactive packet manipulation program, written in python
- dsniff: a collection of tools for network auditing and penetration testing
-
- snort: libpcap-based packet sniffer/logger/lightweight IDS
Network Emulation
- NIST Net is a network emulation package that runs on Linux. NIST Net allows a single Linux PC set up as a router to emulate a wide variety of network conditions. Introduction to WAN Emulation: 6200networks.com - WAN Emulation Toolkit
- Clownix: emulate a network on which connections are changing (for dynamix routing, Mobile IP, ...)
Mail
- dspam: A statistical-algorithmic hybrid anti-spam filter written in C
Other tools
- EtherPuppet: capture packets going through an interface and send them to a virtual interface on an other machine using a TCP connection
